A Career is a sequence of jobs or activities whether planned or unplanned involving employees’ advancement, commitment and personal development over a period of time.

Career management is the process of designing and implementing goals, plans and strategies to enable the organisation to satisfy employee needs while allowing individuals to achieve their career goals.

Career is an individual responsibility as the organisation is just a mere guide. Career development is the process of self-knowledge, exploration, and decision-making that shapes your career. It requires successfully navigating your occupational options to choose and train for jobs that suit your personality, skills, and interests.

When someone pays careful attention to their career development, they identify their own strengths and blind spots, then work hard to improve their skills. It also involved learning about different roles and industries to find a match to their abilities, seeking out opportunities to advance, and maybe even changing careers altogether if they find a more suitable one.

There are Five(5) Stages an individual goes through in the course of their career :-

1. Exploration: this is the stage at which one transits from formal educational institution to a work environment. At this stage, individuals are unclear about what career they want for themselves, hence the decision of what career choice to make is usually influenced by parents, environment, peers or financial resources.

2.  Establishment: this is the stage where individuals get a job and begin to learn about what the job entails as well as getting a real taste of success or failure in the work environment

3.Mid- Career: at this stage, individuals may continue to improve their performance on the job or begin to deteriorate. At this point, the individual is expected to have moved from an apprentice status

4. Late Career: at this stage, individuals have attained a position where they are being looked up to by younger employees. They assume the position of coaches, mentors, sharing the knowledge and experience they have gained over the years.

5. Decline: this is the final stage in one’s career. It is the point at which an individual retires from active service.
